There is a very popular brand of clothing now on the market, which is worn mostly by the young and hip. The clothing line is known as OBEY.
Sometimes the brand name “OBEY” is simply printed on hats, or sometimes it is accompanied by a creative picture that is part of the art work of the artist who created the concept, whose name is Shepard Fairey. Fairey is most known for his famous picture for president Obama’s 2008 campaign logo, which features a profile of Obama with the word “hope” underneath.
Since then, Fairey has achieved much more attention through his other artwork which he often paints on public spaces. The OBEY concept was “borrowed” from a 1980’s movie called “They Live.” In the movie, aliens have been taking over the earth, but they look like normal people. Somehow, the lead character in the movie comes across a pair of sunglasses which allow him to see who are normal humans and who are the aliens. What he also finds out is that advertisements of all sorts have hidden messages that can only be seen when wearing the sunglasses. Here’s a short clip from the movie that shows exactly what I mean:
(Side note: We have used this same short clip in the beginning of our documentary called “Choosing” which you watch by clicking on the “Choosing” cover on the right side of the screen).
What is most ironic is that the artist, Fairey, might have originally intended this “OBEY” art concept to get people to challenge the apathy and consumerism that stupefies the masses. Sadly, his art has now been co-opted by the same forces that work to keep people spiritually asleep and seduced by materialism. (As so clearly portrayed in the short clip from “They Live”). I have asked many people who wear the “OBEY” clothes whether or not they are aware of where the concept came from and what it was meant to convey, and about 99.99% haven’t got a clue.
It’s so strange that “rebellion” against a shallow consumerist culture can be perverted into supporting the very thing one is supposedly trying to rebel against. Such is the shrewdness of Satan!
The only One worthy of our absolute obedience is our Master and Teacher, Jesus Christ. He is the only true rebel and revolutionary. He specifically calls on us to reject the values of a world gone mad with the love of money, and choose instead to follow Him in voluntary poverty and simplicity and LOVE? in order to set an example for others who want to live a truly extraordinary life. The paradox is that by obeying Jesus, we are set free, whereas if we try to follow the way of the world, we are still slaves. Choose freedom…OBEY Jesus!
Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” (John 14:23)
